Scottish Highlands / United Kingdom When to visit
When should I visit Scottish Highlands, United Kingdom, for the best experience?
The short answer
May and June — the Cairngorms National Park holds 55 summits above 900 m (2,953 ft), and these are the 2 months with the high ground clear of winter conditions and the open hill clear of the autumn stalking peak.
The answer, with local context
The Highlands are not one season because they are not one altitude. The Cairngorms National Park Authority records that 36 percent of the park lies above 600 m (1,969 ft) and that about 40 percent of it is heather moorland, with roughly 15 percent forest or woodland. Four of Scotland's 5 highest mountains sit inside its boundary. A trip planned around the glens and a trip planned around the tops are therefore two different calendars, and the higher one is much shorter.
Autumn brings a constraint most visitors never see published. The Deer (Close Seasons) (Scotland) Order 2011 sets close seasons running from 16 February to 20 October for female red, sika and fallow deer, and from 1 April to 20 October for female roe. The Schedule was amended on 21 October 2023 and now lists no close season at all for male deer, which means stag stalking is legally possible year-round. Culling activity therefore concentrates in late summer and autumn across the open hill, and the 20 October date is the hinge for hinds.
The park is also at its busiest in a predictable way. The Authority puts annual visitor numbers at over 1.4 million, of whom 63 percent come from Scotland, 19 percent from the rest of the UK and 18 percent from overseas — a domestic-majority pattern that loads the Scottish school and bank holidays far more heavily than it loads any single foreign season.
Picture the place
The Authority's own accounting of the park — 55 summits over 900 m and 36 percent of the ground above 600 m, inside 4,528 sq km (1,748 sq mi) — is the reason weather at the car park tells you very little about weather at the top.
The easily missed detail
Some of the best single days in the Highlands are tied to a fixed date rather than a season. Historic Environment Scotland runs its Jacobite Festival at Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness from 17 to 25 August, and admission to the festival is included in the castle ticket rather than charged separately. That is a 9-day window in the middle of the busiest month, which is worth knowing in both directions.
A practical rhythm
- Late spring — The high plateau becomes reliably walkable while the glens are still quiet; the park's 984 km of Core Paths are at their most usable.
- High summer — The domestic peak, and the week of the Urquhart Jacobite Festival in late August.
- After 20 October — The close season for hinds begins, and the open hill changes character for walkers.
What could complicate the plan
Since 8 January 2025, US citizens have needed a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits, tourism or business, including transit through UK airports. The US International Trade Administration, writing on 27 January 2025, put the cost at about 12.75 US dollars, the validity at 2 years, and the processing time at up to 3 working days. Beyond the border, the park's own figures explain the second complication: a population of just over 17,000 people spread across 4,528 sq km means accommodation and services are thin relative to 1.4 million annual visitors, and the Authority projects the resident population reaching 20,000 only by 2040.
What to do next
The Scottish Highlands things-to-do answer in this group covers Beinn Eighe and Urquhart Castle in detail, and the food answer explains why the Speyside whisky region overlaps the national park's western edge.
