Sierra Leone country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Sierra Leone without rushing?

The short answer

Plan for 2 weeks inside the November-to-February dry window, and get the visa sequence right first — a single-entry Sierra Leonean visa is valid 90 days from issue but allows a stay of only 30 days, so applying too early wastes it.

The answer, with local context

Visa structure shapes the trip length. The FCDO records single-entry visas as valid for 90 days from the date of issue for visits of up to a maximum of 30 days, and multiple-entry visas as valid for 365 days from issue, covering separate trips of up to 30 days each. A visa can be bought on arrival for 80 US dollars, paid in cash in US dollars, or applied for online in advance; anything other than a visit or business trip must be arranged before traveling. The passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the visa application date, and proof of yellow fever vaccination has to be produced at the border. The ITA adds that citizens of ECOWAS member states are exempt from the visa requirement altogether, and that visas issued on arrival are single-entry, valid for 1 month, and extendable once in country.

Then the ground. The ITA places Freetown International Airport at Lungi, across the Rokel River estuary, reached by water taxi, ferry, or a drive of roughly 3 hours on a toll road — so the first and last days of any itinerary are partly spent on that crossing. It recommends hiring a car with a driver, or a four-wheel-drive with driver for travel upcountry, advises avoiding poda poda public vans as often overloaded and unsafe, and discourages driving after dark outside Freetown and other major cities.

Then the working week. Government offices and businesses generally run 0800 to 1700, Monday to Friday, with a closure from 1300 to 1400. Some offices shut on Friday afternoons for prayers, many hold staff meetings on Monday and Friday mornings, and executive government meetings often fall on Wednesdays. The ITA's published list carries 12 public holidays for 2026, with Muslim holidays announced separately by the government. Sierra Leone keeps Greenwich Mean Time year-round, so there is no seasonal clock change to plan around.

Picture the place

The country is small enough that the journeys feel disproportionate. From an airport on the far side of an estuary you reach a capital pressed between the Atlantic and 183.37 km² of protected forest; from there the drive east toward Gola's 710.7 km² runs on roads the ITA describes as needing upgrading, particularly outside the capital.

The easily missed detail

Money logistics will shape your days more than any booking. The economy is primarily cash-based with a floating exchange rate; the leone was redenominated in July 2022 with 3 zeroes removed and the old notes retired as legal tender; some hotels and businesses accept neither cards nor traveler's cheques; and large transfers must go through banks or authorized financial instruments under the 2012 Anti-Money Laundering and Combating Financing of Terrorism Act. Amounts above US$10,000 must be declared on arrival. Carrying enough cash, in the right notes, is a planning task rather than an afterthought.

A practical rhythm

  • Week 1 — Freetown and the peninsula, with the estuary crossing absorbed into arrival day rather than squeezed.
  • Week 2 — One upcountry destination, reached with a four-wheel-drive and a driver and with no night driving.
  • Buffer day — Keep a weekday morning free; the 1300-to-1400 closure means a single errand can take a whole half-day.

What could complicate the plan

Health infrastructure is the constraint to take most seriously. The ITA states that medical services are severely limited, often require immediate cash payment and generally do not meet US standards; that the 117 emergency number is not always operational; that ambulance services are unreliable and often lack equipment and trained paramedics; that malaria is prevalent and prophylaxis should start before arrival; that counterfeit drugs are reported to be widespread, so prescription medication should be carried in original packaging with a doctor's prescription; and that supplemental insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended. Connectivity is patchy: 3 mobile operators serve the country, 3G and 4G are nationwide but spotty outside urban centres, 5G is limited mainly to Freetown, and internet penetration stood at 32.4% in 2022. Electrical supply is 220 volts on three-pronged type G plugs, and the international dialling code is +232. An export licence is required to leave with precious stones.
