Sierra Leone country guide Places and experiences
What should a first-time traveler see in Sierra Leone beyond the obvious highlights?
The short answer
Gola Rainforest National Park, a protected block with a reported area of 710.7 km² in the UNEP-WCMC World Database on Protected Areas — the deep-interior forest that first itineraries trade away for the beaches.
The answer, with local context
Sierra Leone's conservation story is told through national designations rather than international inscriptions, and the register that records them is the UNEP-WCMC World Database on Protected Areas. Gola Rainforest National Park appears there with a reported area of 710.7 km², classified among terrestrial and inland-water protected areas. Against the 183.37 km² of the Western Area Peninsula Forest at the capital, Gola is a different order of landscape altogether.
The second thing most first trips miss is that Sierra Leone's coast is a working fishery of national scale, not a scenic backdrop. FAO's fishery country profile gives a coastline of 560 km, a continental shelf of 30,000 km² and an exclusive economic zone of 155,700 km², claimed to 200 nautical miles in the early 1980s. In 2003 the country recorded 96,926 tonnes of fish production in liveweight, all of it for direct human consumption, from a fleet of about 8,000 artisanal craft working out of 530 landing sites — against only 613 engines across that whole fleet. Inland capture fisheries added about 16,500 tonnes a year, and pond aquaculture about 60 tonnes from roughly 1,200 ponds.
What ties the two together is reach. The ITA guide recommends hiring a car with a driver, or a four-wheel-drive with a driver for travel within the country, and notes that many roads outside Freetown need upgrading. Gola is a multi-day proposition from the capital; the landing sites are not.
Picture the place
The contrast is the point of a Sierra Leone itinerary. Gola's 710.7 km² sit inland, closed-canopy, and well away from the roads that serve the capital. The fishing coast is open, worked daily, and almost entirely unmotorized — 613 engines spread across roughly 8,000 craft means most boats are still paddled or sailed.
The easily missed detail
Sierra Leone's artisanal fishery is a processing economy, not just a catching one. FAO records that artisanal landings go mainly into hot-smoked products, with smaller volumes salted and sun-dried, and that in 2005 the sector supported 30,000 full-time fishermen alongside about 200,000 part-time jobs in processing, marketing and boat-building — roughly 250,000 people in total across the whole fisheries sector. Smoking racks at a landing site are therefore the most characteristic working scene on the coast, and the smoked fish is the form in which most of the catch travels inland.
A practical rhythm
- Interior — Gola's 710.7 km² reward time, and reaching them needs a four-wheel-drive and a driver.
- Coast — Work a landing site in the early morning, when the unmotorized fleet comes in.
- Capital — Keep the 183.37 km² peninsula forest for the start or end of the trip, since it is the one block reachable within the city.
What could complicate the plan
Protected Planet's records for both Gola and the Western Area Peninsula Forest give a reported area but state no IUCN management category, no legal designation type and no governance type, so the practical access rules have to come from the park administration rather than the register. Road travel is the harder constraint: the ITA advises avoiding poda poda public vans as often overloaded and unsafe, discourages driving after dark outside Freetown and the major cities, and recommends carrying passport copies within the country. Mobile coverage thins out fast — 3G and 4G are available nationwide but spotty beyond urban centres, 5G is limited mainly to Freetown, and internet penetration was 32.4% in 2022. Finally, an export licence is required to leave Sierra Leone with precious stones, which matters in the diamond districts on the way east.
What to do next
The Sierra Leone when-to-visit answer explains the March-to-October rainy season and the Lungi estuary crossing that governs arrival. For smoked fish, rice and where to eat them, see the Sierra Leone food question.
