Tanzania country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Tanzania without rushing?

The short answer

Allow approximately twelve to fourteen days for a first Tanzania trip combining the northern safari circuit with Zanzibar, rather than attempting every major national park, Kilimanjaro and the coast in one itinerary.

The answer, with local context

Arusha is a practical starting point for Tanzania's northern wildlife circuit. From there, travelers can organize visits to Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park. These places lie across a substantial region, and game drives require time for both travel and wildlife viewing.

For a balanced itinerary, allocate approximately six or seven days to the safari portion. This allows multiple wildlife areas to be experienced without a different overnight stop every day.

After the mainland circuit, Zanzibar adds a historical and coastal dimension. Spend at least one or two nights exploring Stone Town before moving to a quieter coastal base. The historic center's streets, carved doorways, market areas and waterfront form part of its distinctive urban landscape.

For U.S. passport holders, Tanzania's immigration authority specifies a multiple-entry visitor visa, priced at US$100 in its published guidance. Other nationalities may qualify for different visa categories. The U.S. Department of State also confirms that an entry visa is required for American tourists.

As of October 16, 2026, the U.S. State Department's nationwide advisory is Level 2 — Exercise Increased Caution, with a higher Level 3 — Reconsider Travel warning for the Mtwara Region border area adjoining Mozambique. This warning does not cover the usual northern safari circuit in the same way.

Picture the place

A first trip can move from northern Tanzania's dry grasslands and volcanic highlands to the coral-stone architecture of Zanzibar, ending along the Indian Ocean coast.

The easily missed detail

A safari park and a conservation area may have different authorities, access arrangements and charges. For example, Serengeti National Park is managed by TANAPA, while Ngorongoro has its own conservation-area authority.

A practical rhythm

Days 1–3: Arrive in the Arusha region and explore Tarangire or another nearby wildlife area.

Days 4–7: Visit Ngorongoro and Serengeti with sufficient time for game drives.

Days 8–13: Travel to Zanzibar for Stone Town and a coastal stay.

What could complicate the plan

Road journeys between safari destinations can be long, and domestic flight schedules shape the transition to Zanzibar. Entry rules, park tariffs and security advisories may change. Tanzania's entry arrangements should be checked against the traveler's nationality and route.

What to do next

Return to to choose safari dates based on the Serengeti's seasonal wildlife movements.
