Morocco country guide When to visit
When is the best time to visit Morocco for Marrakech?
The short answer
April to May and October to November — those months work across Morocco's very different zones at once, and in Marrakech specifically they put the monthly mean between 65.7°F (18.7°C) and 71.2°F (21.8°C) instead of July's 83.7°F (28.7°C).
The answer, with local context
Morocco is not one climate and planning it as one is the usual mistake. The country runs from an Atlantic coast cooled by upwelling, through a Mediterranean north, over the Middle and High Atlas — which hold snow and a ski season — into pre-Saharan oases and dune fields in the south-east. A single date range cannot be ideal everywhere, but the two shoulder windows are the closest thing: warm enough for the Atlas passes to be open, cool enough for the south to be bearable, and outside the Atlantic coast's summer fog season.
Those nine UNESCO World Heritage properties are spread across all of it. The Medina of Fez, the Medina of Marrakesh, the Ksar of Aït-Ben-Haddou, the Historic City of Meknes, the archaeological site of Volubilis, the medinas of Tétouan and Essaouira, the Portuguese City of Mazagan at El Jadida and Rabat as modern capital and historic city between them cover coast, plain, mountain and desert margin. An itinerary built from them is also an itinerary across four climates.
Marrakech is the anchor and it behaves like an inland city on the edge of a hot interior. WMO normals for the station put January at 53.8°F (12.1°C), April at 65.7°F (18.7°C), July at 83.7°F (28.7°C) and October at 71.2°F (21.8°C), with July rainfall of 0.06 inches (1.4 mm) and an annual total near 8.4 inches (212 mm). The city sits at 464 m (1,522 ft), on the plain directly below the High Atlas, which is why a Marrakech base can put you in the mountains inside two hours and in the pre-Sahara in a long day.
The published authority fact that most often decides a Marrakech day is not weather at all. The Musée National du Tissage et du Tapis Dar Si Said opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, closes Mondays, and charges MAD 30 per adult and MAD 10 for children over 12.
Picture the place
Approaching Marrakech from the north in April, the High Atlas is still carrying snow on the skyline while the plain below is already dry and warm — the two things visible in the same glance, which is the single most Moroccan view in the country and the reason the city became a staging post in the first place.
The easily missed detail
Marrakech holds a heritage listing that has nothing to do with its buildings. The cultural space of Jemaa el-Fna Square was proclaimed in 2001 and inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008, for practices rather than architecture — storytellers, bards who improvise on outlines of ancient texts, Gnaoua dancers, Berber musicians and senthir players, plus trades from henna tattooing to water-carrying. It is why an evening in the square counts as a heritage visit.
A practical rhythm
- April and May — North and interior together: Fez, Meknes and Volubilis in comfortable heat, with Marrakech still under 70°F (21°C) as a monthly mean.
- October and November — South and desert margin, once the summer interior heat has broken.
- December to February — Coast and cities only; the Atlas passes carry snow and the southern nights turn cold.
What could complicate the plan
The US Department of State places Morocco at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, issued 21 April 2025, due to terrorism. The CDC lists Rabies in Morocco as a Level 1 notice dated 23 December 2025. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office requires a British citizen passport to expire at least three months after arrival, and a polio vaccination certificate from travelers arriving from a polio-affected country. Internal distances are the real constraint: Morocco's World Heritage sites are hundreds of miles apart and the mountain roads between them are slow.
What to do next
The trip-planning question in this group deals with sequencing and distances. For what lies past the headline cities, see the places-and-experiences question.
