Panama country guide Trip planning

How can I plan a memorable first trip to Panama without rushing?

The short answer

Build it on two bases, not five — the Pacific side in the January-to-mid-April dry season, plus one of the outlying World Heritage regions, because Panama's five inscribed properties run from the Costa Rican border to the Caribbean fortifications and cannot be strung together in a week.

The answer, with local context

The first planning decision in Panama is a calendar one. The national meteorological service divides the year into a dry season from January to mid-April, transition months in April and May, and a rainy season from May to December, with December functioning as the turn back toward dry. Choose a dry-season fortnight and most of the rest gets easier.

The second decision is geographic triage. Panama ratified the World Heritage Convention on 3 March 1978 and now has five properties on the list. One is in the capital. Coiba National Park and its Special Zone of Marine Protection is offshore in the Pacific. The Talamanca Range-La Amistad reserves sit on the western border and have been generating conservation reports to the World Heritage Committee since 1990. The Fortifications on the Caribbean Side of Panama at Portobelo-San Lorenzo are at the canal's Atlantic end. An unrushed first trip takes the capital plus one of the other three.

The canal is the connector, and it is the one fixed, ticketed thing in the itinerary. The Panama Canal Authority runs two visitor centers: Miraflores on the Pacific side and Agua Clara on the Caribbean, with separate tariffs — non-residents aged 13 and over pay B/.17.22 at Miraflores and B/.10.00 at Agua Clara, with reduced rates of B/.7.22 and B/.5.00 for children aged 6 to 12. If you are going to the Caribbean fortifications anyway, Agua Clara is the cheaper lock viewing and sits on the right side of the isthmus for that leg.

Humidity is the hidden pacing factor. Panama City's monthly mean temperature never leaves a band between 26.3°C (79.3°F) and 28.1°C (82.6°F), so there is no cool month to walk in — only a drier one. Plan half-days outdoors rather than full ones, in any season.

Picture the place

Panamá Viejo stands as roofless masonry on open ground near the shore, so there is almost no shade on the site; the walled district the city moved to, by contrast, is a grid of narrow streets where the buildings themselves provide most of the cover.

The easily missed detail

Resident and non-resident pricing is a real structural feature at Panamanian national attractions, not a rounding error. At the canal's visitor centers a Panamanian adult pays B/.3.00, a retiree B/.1.50, and a resident aged 0 to 18 nothing, on production of a national identity card; the non-resident adult rate at Miraflores is more than five times the resident one. Operators buying 25 or more tickets in a single transaction get B/.15.22. That is worth knowing when comparing a packaged tour price against walking up.

A practical rhythm

  • Days one to four — The capital, the joined Panamá Viejo and Historic District property, and a Pacific-side lock visit.
  • Days five to eight — One outlying region: Caribbean fortifications, Coiba's marine zone, or the Talamanca highlands.
  • Buffer — Keep one unscheduled day; internal legs to Coiba and La Amistad depend on boats and mountain roads.

What could complicate the plan

The rainy season covers eight months, and from May to November the capital averages above 170 mm of rain monthly, with October at 329.6 mm. Three of the five World Heritage properties are under long-running state-of-conservation reporting — Portobelo-San Lorenzo since 2000, Coiba since 2009 and La Amistad since 1990 — and individual components can be closed or altered during works. Distances are the real limiter: these sites sit at opposite ends of a country roughly 500 miles long on its east–west axis, and treating them as one circuit is what turns a good trip into a bus schedule.

What to do next

The when-to-visit question in this group has the full month-by-month rainfall picture for the capital, and the food question covers how the two coasts differ on the plate.
