Saudi Arabia country guide When to visit

When is the best time to visit Saudi Arabia for AlUla?

The short answer

January — AlUla sits at about 70°F (21°C) by day while Winter at Tantora fills its old town with concerts, and the rest of the kingdom, from Riyadh's 68°F (20°C) afternoons to the Red Sea coast, is simultaneously at its most walkable.

The answer, with local context

Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Middle East at about 830,000 square miles (2.15 million km²), and its calendar splits into a winter you can move in and a summer you plan around. January is the peak of the good half. In AlUla's oasis valley in the northwest, January averages a high of about 70°F (21°C) and a low of 45°F (7°C) with a fifth of an inch of rain — shirt-sleeve days for the tombs, genuinely cold nights in the desert. The nation lines up behind it: Riyadh averages 68°F (20°C) by day, Jeddah a humid 82°F (28°C) on the Red Sea, and even the southern Asir highlands around Abha, at over 7,000 feet, sit cool rather than cold. Summer inverts everything — AlUla regularly tops 110°F (43°C), Riyadh pushes toward 109°F (43°C), and the country's outdoor life shuts down until dark, with Asir's misty mountains the single sane exception.

AlUla's anchor is Hegra, and it carries the published authority fact this question demands. UNESCO inscribed the Hegra Archaeological Site in 2008 as Saudi Arabia's first World Heritage property — the largest conserved Nabataean city south of Petra, its 111 monumental rock-cut tombs dating from the 1st century BCE to the 1st century CE. January is when Hegra is at its best and most comfortable: morning light on the facades, midday warmth without punishment, and the site's open, shadeless desert no obstacle at all. The month also catches the tail of Winter at Tantora, AlUla's flagship festival, whose 2025–26 edition ran from mid-December to January 10 — open-air concerts in the mud-brick Old Town, desert polo in mid-January and a trail race later in the month extending the season's energy.

The discipline January imposes is the cold. The same desert that bakes in July radiates its heat away at night, AlUla's lows dip toward the low 40s°F (5°C), and the canvas-ceilinged desert camps and outdoor evening concerts demand a real jacket. Book early for it — festival weeks make AlUla the kingdom's tightest hotel market, and its small, conservation-capped room supply is the first thing in the country to sell out.

Picture the place

At eight on a January morning the Qasr al-Farid stands alone in its wadi, a four-story tomb facade carved from a single outcrop, its steps and columns gilded by the low sun while the valley floor behind it is still in blue shadow.

The easily missed detail

AlUla's season is set by astronomy as much as weather. Tantora is named for the sundial in the Old Town whose shadow marked the start of the winter planting season — the festival still opens on the winter solstice, which is why the whole cultural calendar, from concerts to the polo, crowds into the solstice-to-mid-January window rather than spreading across the pleasant months.

A practical rhythm

  • Morning — Hegra at opening, walking the tomb clusters in angled light before the valley warms.
  • Midday — AlUla's palm-shaded Old Town and lunch in the oasis, the day's mildest hours spent in shade and green.
  • After dark — Elephant Rock and the festival concerts, bundled against a desert night that will feel colder than the forecast promises.

What could complicate the plan

January is peak of peak: AlUla's rooms, experiences and festival headliners sell out weeks ahead, and the Royal Commission for AlUla caps numbers at Hegra and the other heritage sites, so spontaneity is not a strategy. Nights occasionally brush freezing in the valley. And Ramadan's drift through the Gregorian calendar eventually lands it in winter — when it does, daytime dining and the festival calendar both change character, so check the lunar calendar for your year before fixing dates.

What to do next

Anchor the trip on early-to-mid January in AlUla, reserve the rooms before the flights, and give the capital its own days rather than treating it as a layover.
