Yemen country guide When to visit
When is the best time to visit Yemen for Old Sana'a?
The short answer
There is currently no advisable window — the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel to Yemen, and Old Sana'a has sat on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 2015.
The answer, with local context
Old Sana'a entered the World Heritage List in 1986, by Committee Decision 10COM VIII, on criteria (iv), (v) and (vi). That inscription was never a verdict on the city's safety — and in 2015 the Committee moved the property onto the Danger List, where UNESCO's state-of-conservation record still places it.
The entry rules are settled even if nothing else is. Yemen requires a visa obtained before arrival, applied for through its embassy rather than at the border, and the FCDO states a passport must carry an expiry date at least 6 months after the date of arrival. That page was refreshed on 30 October 2026 and still opens with advice against all travel.
Seasonality in highland Yemen is agricultural rather than touristic, and FAO's Global Information and Early Warning System tracks it closely. Its country brief of 13 October 2026 records that the winter wheat harvest in the Northern and Central Highlands — the uplands Sana'a sits among — was completed in June 2026, and that the sorghum and millet harvest was expected to begin from mid-October. July 2026 brought significant rainfall deficits across most producing areas before rain improved from late July; September was below average again in several districts.
That gives the shape of a Sana'a year: a dry early summer, a late-summer kharif rain pulse that drives vegetation growth, and a harvest season running into autumn. It is the calendar that governs when the highlands look their best, and it is the only part of the question that can be answered with any confidence.
Picture the place
UNESCO's conservation reporting on the Old City describes historic houses in a general state of disrepair, and the historic suq pushing outward into the residential quarters around it. That is the texture of the place now — a living, pressured neighborhood rather than a swept monument.
The easily missed detail
Sana'a is not Yemen's only Danger-listed property, and that matters for anyone picturing a future itinerary. The Old Walled City of Shibam, inscribed in 1982 under Decision 06COM VIII.20, has appeared in the Committee's annual Danger List updates in every session from 2015 through 2025, and the Landmarks of the Ancient Kingdom of Saba at Marib were put on the World Heritage List and the Danger List in the same breath in 2023. Yemen has 5 inscribed properties in total and 35 sites waiting on its Tentative List.
A practical rhythm
- Before anything else — Read the FCDO country page in full. Its advice against all travel is the governing fact, not a footnote to the weather.
- If advice ever changes — The visa is embassy-issued and must be in hand before departure, so the paperwork, not the season, sets the earliest possible date.
- Choosing months — FAO's harvest markers put the highland cereal year at its fullest from mid-October, after the late-summer rains have run.
What could complicate the plan
Almost everything. Beyond the all-travel warning, FAO's October 2026 brief projects about 5.4 million people — half the analyzed population in government-controlled areas — at IPC Phase 3 or above from October to December 2026, with roughly 1.8 million of them in Phase 4. Yemen's 2026 cereal import requirement is forecast at 5.2 million tonnes, close to its 5-year average, which tells you how much of the country's food arrives by ship. Insurance, medical evacuation and domestic movement are all shaped by that, long before anyone reaches a city gate.
What to do next
The Yemen trip-planning question in this chapter sets out the entry paperwork in detail; the places question covers Socotra, Shibam and Marib, which carry their own separate restrictions.
