Zimbabwe country guide Trip planning
How can I plan a memorable first trip to Zimbabwe without rushing?
The short answer
Allow around ten to fourteen days for Victoria Falls, Hwange and one major cultural destination, keeping the itinerary focused rather than attempting every national park and archaeological site.
The answer, with local context
Begin at Victoria Falls, where two or three nights provide time to explore the waterfall, the Zambezi River and the surrounding area. The waterfall is jointly recognized with Zambia as a World Heritage property, but its viewing paths and national-park access arrangements differ on either side of the border.
From Victoria Falls, continue to Hwange National Park. Spend approximately three nights at a suitable safari base to allow multiple morning and afternoon wildlife drives. This is especially useful during the dry months when animal movements may be concentrated near water.
For the cultural portion, choose between Bulawayo and the Matobo Hills, or travel toward Masvingo and Great Zimbabwe. The two alternatives are not interchangeable: Matobo's granite landscape and rock-art heritage differ fundamentally from the monumental masonry at Great Zimbabwe.
Visitors interested in Mana Pools should plan it as a separate major component. The park lies in northern Zimbabwe along the Zambezi, making it impractical to include as a casual detour from the western route.
For U.S. passport holders, Zimbabwe requires a tourist visa, which the U.S. Department of State states may be obtained on arrival or through the official eVisa platform. As of November 2026, the advisory page lists Zimbabwe at Level 2 — Exercise Increased Caution, citing crime and official harassment.
The department's country information also sets out the fee tiers, and the right one depends on the shape of the route: USD 30 buys a single entry valid 30 days, USD 45 a double entry valid 45 days, and USD 160 a 12-month multiple-entry visa. An itinerary that crosses to the Zambian side of Victoria Falls and comes back is not a single-entry trip.
Picture the place
The route links the Zambezi gorge, Hwange's dry woodland and either the granite hills of Matobo or the historic stone architecture near Masvingo.
The easily missed detail
Zimbabwe's UNESCO properties are geographically dispersed. A route chosen by the number of famous sites rather than driving distance can sacrifice several days to transfers.
A practical rhythm
Days 1–3: Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River.
Days 4–7: Hwange National Park, including multiple game drives.
Days 8–12: Bulawayo and Matobo, or a longer cultural route toward Great Zimbabwe.
What could complicate the plan
Road conditions and intercity travel times vary. A traveler arriving through South Africa should pay particular attention to passport blank-page requirements; the State Department advises at least six blank pages when traveling into Zimbabwe via South Africa.
What to do next
Return to to choose travel dates suited to waterfall conditions and dry-season wildlife viewing.
